The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), in collaboration with the Congo Square Preservation Society, presents the newest installment of the Elders Sacred Talk Series which celebrates the lives and legacies of influential elder community members in New Orleans.
The talk series strives to honor these cultural trailblazers while offering audiences a unique chance to learn from their stories and contributions to rich history of the iconic city of New Orleans, with the next installment scheduled for Wednesday, December 18th.
The series will take place at NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts from 6pm to 7:15 pm and will focus on the accomplishments of Jennifer Turner (aka Mama Jen) and Chaula cha Jua who are both noted for their impact on the cultural and artistic landscape of New Orleans.
Chakula cha Jua is a celebrated playwright, poet, educator, and theater director with over 50 years of experience in the New Orleans Black theater community, while Turner is a celebrated community griot and the manager of the Community Book Center, which is a cornerstone of Black literary culture in the city of New Orleans.
The Elders Sacred Talk Series is free with museum admission and residents can gain free admission every Wednesday thanks to The Helis Foundation.
